Hydraform Construction Training: Built on 38 Years of Building

The right level of training for every team, every project, every location.

Hydraform construction training has equipped thousands of builders, foremen, block yard operators, entrepreneurs, development organisations, and government contractors across more than 70 countries with the skills to produce and build with interlocking soil-cement blocks. Since 1988 — when Hydraform pioneered on-site block production using the soil already under your feet — we have made it our mission to transfer that knowledge. We don't just sell machines. We build, we train, and we partner.

You're Learning from the Company That Invented the Method

Hydraform didn't adopt interlocking compressed earth block construction — we created it. In 1988, founder Jochen Kofahl developed the first portable hydraulic block-making machine that could produce high-quality soil-cement blocks directly on a construction site, eliminating the cost and delay of transporting conventional fired brick. The technology spread across Africa and beyond — and "Hydraform" became the generic term used continent-wide for this method of building.

Our trainers aren't teaching a method from a manual — they are the method. They have operated the machines, tested thousands of soil samples, managed blockyards, trained teams across dozens of countries, and built structures that are still standing. Read the full Hydraform story →

The Hydraform system is Agrement-certified (Certificate 96/237, CSIR), registered with the NHBRC, and a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa. When a funder, engineer, or procurement officer asks for training documentation, those credentials are behind it.

The Technology Behind the Training

Two complementary building technologies — both covered across Hydraform's training programmes

Interlocking Soil-Cement Blocks

Hydraform's interlocking blockmaking machines produce compressed earth blocks from locally sourced soil and a minimal cement addition — typically a 1:10 ratio. The blocks interlock using a tongue-and-groove design, which means construction is dry-stacked: mortar is used only on the first course, pillars, and ring beam. The result is a structure that goes up to six times faster than conventional brick, uses materials sourced on-site, reduces transport costs by 30–40%, produces no fired-brick carbon load, and meets certified structural standards.

This is eco-friendly building technology that was eco-friendly before that was a selling point — pioneered by Hydraform in 1988 and proven across 70+ countries in the decades since.

Conventional Brick, Block & Paving

Hydraform's brick, paver, and block-making machines produce the full conventional range — standard bricks, hollow blocks, pavers, and more. The Training Academy covers conventional brick production on Day 1, giving delegates a complete foundational understanding before moving into interlocking block technology.

This makes Hydraform-trained operators genuinely versatile — not locked into a single system. Whether a project requires conventional brick, interlocking soil-cement blocks, or a combination, trained delegates can deliver. Both technologies are covered across all three training programmes.

Training That Serves Every Sector

The Hydraform building system operates across industries — and our training is designed to serve all of them

NGOs, Foundations & Social Impact

Community upliftment projects, housing programmes, and CSI initiatives need a building technology that is fast, affordable, and auditable. The Hydraform system builds up to six times faster than conventional brick — critical when building homes for communities. Training gives field teams certified skills with documentation funders can verify.

Entrepreneurs & Block Yard Operators

On-site block production eliminates the biggest cost in conventional construction: material transport. Trained entrepreneurs can set up a productive blockyard, produce and sell blocks, or build directly — with 30–40% lower operating costs and faster project completion than competitors using conventional methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Hydraform construction training

What types of construction training does Hydraform offer?

Hydraform offers three training programmes. The Training Academy is a structured 5-day certified course held three times per year at Hydraform's headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa — covering the complete Hydraform system and awarding a Certificate of Competency on passing. Onsite Training sends Hydraform's qualified trainers to your location to train your team in situ, awarding a Certificate of Attendance on completion. Ground Support provides extended onsite monitoring, troubleshooting, and quality evaluation for as long as a project requires, with scope and pricing agreed per project.

What does Hydraform construction training cover?

Hydraform training covers the full spectrum of the Hydraform building system: soil selection and testing, mix design and cement ratios, machine operation and maintenance for both interlocking block and conventional brick and paving machines, block yard setup and management, interlocking block construction from foundation to ring beam, quality control and block testing, and — at the Training Academy — business, sales, and marketing strategy.

Who is Hydraform construction training for?

Hydraform training serves a wide range of sectors and roles. This includes NGOs and development organisations training field teams, entrepreneurs starting or growing a block-making business, foremen and site supervisors managing construction teams, bricklayers and artisans adding a certified skill, property developers and contractors building at scale, mining operations requiring on-site construction capability, and government contractors and CSI programmes requiring certified, auditable training outcomes.

In which languages is Hydraform training available?

The Hydraform Training Academy in Johannesburg is delivered in English, with French-speaking participants accommodated. Hydraform Onsite Training and Ground Support are available in English, French, Swahili, and Zulu. The required language must be specified at the time of booking.

Is Hydraform training available outside South Africa?

Yes. Hydraform Onsite Training and Ground Support are deployed internationally — our trainers travel to your site wherever it is located. The Training Academy is held at Hydraform's headquarters in Johannesburg and requires delegates to travel to South Africa. Hydraform operates across more than 70 countries and has delivered training across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.

What certification do I receive from Hydraform training?

The Training Academy awards an Official Hydraform Certificate of Competency to delegates who pass the written exam on Day 5. This is the highest level of Hydraform training certification. Onsite Training awards a Hydraform Certificate of Attendance on completion. Ground Support does not award a certificate but produces comprehensive written reports for client records and project documentation.

Why build with interlocking soil-cement blocks instead of conventional brick?

Interlocking soil-cement blocks — the Hydraform system — eliminate mortar between joints by using a tongue-and-groove interlock, meaning construction requires mortar only on the first course, pillars, and ring beam. This produces construction speeds up to six times faster than conventional brick. Using soil sourced on-site reduces material and transport costs by 30–40%. The system is eco-friendly — no kiln firing, minimal cement, no long-distance material haulage. It is Agrement-certified (Certificate 96/237, CSIR) and in use across 70+ countries for housing, schools, clinics, community facilities, and commercial projects.

How do I know which Hydraform training option is right for my project?

If you are sending one or a small group of delegates who need a full structured programme with a formal certification, the Training Academy is appropriate. If you have a team already on a site and need them trained quickly on your own machines and materials, Onsite Training delivers faster and more operationally relevant results. If your project requires sustained quality assurance beyond initial training, Ground Support is the appropriate next step. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
