As a part of Hydraforms’ effort to assist the Office of the Prime Minister to rebuild the conflict affected region of Northern Uganda, we arranged a “team build” which was intended to be a showcase of Hydraform’s brick and block building technology.
By involving the local community, NGO’s, top level representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister and Hydraform and most importantly showed the Ugandan Governments commitment to the people of northern Karamoja.
The goal was to construct a house in 1 day! This seemingly unobtainable challenge was taken up by eager participants, some of which had never seen a Hydraform block, with great enthusiasm.
On Tuesday 27 October 2009 the challenge began.
Even with a 2.5 hour delay to the start of the build, progress was soon visible. All parts of the communities, young and old were lending a hand in building the structure. Showing that
By lunch-time the walls of the 3 room house had already reached the height of the top of the doors and windows.
By the 6th hour of construction the ring-beam was in place.
In 8.5 hours of work roof structures were in place.
This was a great moment for many of the hard working participants and for the people of Karamoja! To mark the achievement, Honourable Minister of Karamoja, First Lady of Uganda, Mrs. Janet Museveni commissioned the demonstration house, the first of 20 such houses near Camp Swahili in Moroto district.
Honourable Minister Museveni also handed over 20 Hydraform houses to beneficiaries in Nunduget, Moroto district.
The event demonstrated indisputably the Sustainability of the Hydraform Builiding System by “Changing the face of Karamoja”!
