Hydraform is being used to rebuild the conflict-scarred northern region of Uganda through the PRDP.
The project has trained more than 100 students to operate the Hydraform block making machines and to build various structures using the Hydraform dry-stacked interlocking blocks.
The project started in Wera-Kangole where 20 houses and a health centre were built. Up until now Wera-Kangole has seen little or no development. One elderly beneficiary was brought to tears in front of Ministers, because she was overwhelmed with gratitude.
Hydraform machines were handed out to various districts in Northern Uganda.
Model villages of 20 houses and a health centre are to be set up in numerous districts in Northern Uganda. The first district to follow the example of Wera-Kangole is Karamoja. This area has seen armed conflict and today suffers with the remnants of a troubled history. In May 2009 Hydraform in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister initiated the project in Moroto, Karamoja. The project received great support and enlisted the help of the strong men and women from a local “Manyata” (village) to manufacture Hydraform blocks and build their own houses. The Karamojong were pleased to be able to learn new skills and in turn to uplift their own families and community!
The second model village is being built on the outskirts of Gulu, Acholi. The response from the community has been positive. All the community members are doing their part to ensure the project's success. Some are involved in the production of Hydraform interlocking blocks while others help out by making food for those involved in the project. Community members understand they all need to work together on the development program from which they will benefit.
Hydraform has committed to provide training and support for the project.
